In a new series for Channel 4 to be broadcast in the summer of 2012 Grayson Perry confronts one of the elephants in the room of British culture – the relationship between taste and social background.
Grayson Perry on Taste takes Perry on a journey from the English country house to a girl’s night out in Sunderland as he uncovers the links between taste and class. It’s not about what is good or bad taste but how our tastes in everything – from the way we decorate our homes to the things we wear – defines us, and why we make the choices we do.
Grayson will then use his experiences as the inspiration for a major new work comprising a set of six tapestries. Contributors to the series will be invited to see the work and debate with Perry how he represented their taste, before the tapestries tour nationwide.
“I spent thirty years building up and honing my North London middle class prejudices about other people’s bad taste,” says Perry about the series. “Now I have taken those prejudices on safari with me to meet the various tribes that make up the British class system. “
